Icon Arts studio offers iconography workshops and classes in Austin, Texas and conducted by iconographer Irene Perez. We also sell essential fine iconography supplies for students and dedicated iconographers.

LEARNING ICONOGRAPHY: If you would like to learn the art of iconography in the Russian-Byzantine style you can attend Icon Arts iconography workshops, weekly open studio time, or schedule a video class or consultation. You will learn to use the ancient method of egg-tempera painting and gilding with genuine gold leaf. The instructor will demonstrate every step of the process of iconography and it’s theological symbolism.

While no art experience is necessary, prospective students must have the ability to retain information given, and transfer the techniques demonstrated by the instructor in order to execute them on their own icons. In addition, students need to be able to attend the full six days of the workshop, sit for six or seven hours each day, and do the work themselves apart from some assistance from the instructor with the use of tools or for demonstrations. The gilding method requires students use deep long breaths, which may be difficult if the student has breathing difficulties. The instructor will provide an alternative method for gilding given advanced notice of breathing problems ahead of the workshop.

Iconography workshops

February 3rd- 8th, 2025 in Austin, Texas
LOCATION: Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church’s Community Center, 414 St Stephen School Rd S, Austin, Tx 78746
ICON: Christ icon (bust from the icon of Christ the Redeemer by Rublev).
SCHEDULE: Monday through Saturday 9 am – 5 pm. Lunch will be around noon and we will break for a 1-hour lunch. Students may bring their lunch or eat out. There will be hot water, assorted tea bags and light snacks available.
Open to students of all levels. This is an intensive class, if students have health issues that would prevent them from sitting for most of the day, or taking deep breaths necessary for gilding, or have pain or tremors in their dominant hand please contact Icon Arts to determine if student will be able to work independently during the workshop.
TUITION: $750, including supplies (a gessoed board, 3 brushes, palette, 4 sheets of 23.5 Kt gold leaf, and pigments used in class).
REGISTRATION and DEADLINE: To register please send your deposit of $400 by January 3rd, 2025, to Icon Arts, 609 E. 47th St, Austin, TX 78751; or venmo @Irene-Perez-40 and write ‘icon workshop deposit’ under “what is this for?” The balance of $350 is due by February 1st, 2025.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU: a hand towel, mechanical pencil, notebook to take notes, covered mug or water bottle if you need to drink in class.

If your request involves larger icons please send your budget requirements and deadline. All the icons are hand painted on gessoed solid wood panels, with gilding clay, 24 Kt. gold leaf, and traditional egg-tempera technique using natural pigments.
